Prof. James Leiper, Associate Medical Director-Translational Research, British Heart Foundation

Prof. James Leiper, Ph.D., is the Associate Medical Director for Translational Research at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), where he plays a key role in shaping the organization’s research strategy and overseeing approximately £100 million in research funding annually. He joined the BHF in April 2020, bringing with him a distinguished background in vascular physiology and molecular medicine. Prior to his current role, Prof. Leiper conducted groundbreaking research at University College London (UCL), focusing on blood vessel function. In 2009, he became a Programme Leader at the Medical Research Council (MRC) London Institute of Medical Sciences. His internationally recognized work has contributed to the founding of a biotechnology company developing new treatments for sepsis. 

Prof. Leiper also holds a professorship in Molecular Medicine at the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow. His research is focused on translating basic science discoveries into treatments for human diseases, particularly within the field of cardiovascular health. Throughout his career, Prof. Leiper has made significant contributions to the understanding of cardiovascular physiology, working alongside leading experts such as Professor Patrick Vallance. His research continues to bridge the gap between laboratory science and clinical applications, particularly in the realm of cardiovascular and metabolic health.
